What is Sera’s Little Library, and why does it exist?
Sera’s Little Library is a project in memory of Sera Silva. We are collecting new and gently used children’s and young adult books to distribute to Little Free Libraries throughout the Florida Panhandle and beyond.
On October 30, 2024, at just 19 years of age, we lost Sera to mental illness. We are fortunate that she left pages and pages of notes, giving us answers that many do not get, documenting her thoughts and feelings as she struggled with her illness. Towards the end of her notes, she said that she worried that she would be remembered more for how she died, than for how she lived. She had no idea how impossible that would be.
Two of Sera’s great loves were books and kids. She was an avid reader, always with a book in hand, often filling the margins with her thoughts and reflections. Even as one of eight siblings, she never seemed to tire of being around children. While at college, she called to chat with her little sisters more often than her parents, and she poured her heart into her job at the YMCA’s after-school program. She spoke often of someday having children of her own. As an American Sign Language interpreting major, her goal was to help bridge the communication gap between Deaf children with Spanish speaking families and a world that is difficult to navigate in one language, let alone three, so they would have the same access and opportunities as hearing children.
Sera loved with her whole heart.
With every book placed in a child’s hands, her story goes on.
